Wayfinding Case Study

Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre a unique facility located in Oakville, Ontario that provides a vast number of activities and opportunities for local community members. Unlike other community centres, the QEPCCC provides facilities for cultural groups and creative groups to create and explore while also providing recreational and physical activity facilities. The 144,000 square feet of activity space that the multi-use facility is home to a diverse collection of programs and workshops. The facility is used by members of the public of all ages. In addition to its abundance of amenities within the Centre, they also have a beautiful park with two soccer fields, walking paths, and a playground. QEPCCC provides opportunities and activities for Oakville residents. For this reason, it is crucial that visitors to the park are able to navigate their way around with ease and enjoyment.

Currently, Queen Elizabeth Park currently only features a few signs at entrances to the park, but otherwise lacks a wayfinding system. There is very little directional signage for both pedestrians and vehicles, and the signage that does exist is often obstructed or difficult to see because of dark colours and shaded areas, and/or obstructing objects/plants. There is no signage indicating the main entrance, no existing map of the park, and no signs indicating the locations of certain facilities such as the soccer fields. Many locals use the area as a place to walk their dogs, bike ride, throw a football, or play soccer. The lack of signage and maps on the exterior of this building does nothing to entice its visitors to check out other aspects of the park or the community centre. This is a lost opportunity to increase the usage of QEPCCC. This project addressed some of these issues by proposing a wayfinding system.  By creating a user-friendly, straightforward wayfinding system that both aids in the navigation of the park, while also enticing park visitors to check out what the community centre has to offer, the overall experience of using the park would be greatly improved. The signage aims to reflect the vibrant culture and creativity of the centre, while complimenting the Town of Oakville's current brand.
